History
Wine-growing
in Burgenland started during the Celtic era. A climax of wine-growing
was reached during the roman period, when the Burgenland was part of the
Roman Empire (Pannonien). After some back-strokes during the migration
of nations (Völkerwanderung) in the 14th century a new flowering period
began. The Turk Wars (Türkenkriege) in the 16th and 17th century again
had a bad influence in our wine-growing. After a short prospering period
the vine-louse destroyed all the wineyards in Horitschon. At the end of
the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century the triumphant march
of our main grape, the Blaufraenkisch-vine, started.
In
the "wine family" Moritz wine-growing started in 1960. From about 12 acres
in the 1980s, we reduced our wineyards to an area of about 6,2 acres to
be able to concentrate on high quality wines. All our wineyards are situated
in the best wine-regions of Horitschon.
